PHILLIES WIN THRILLER OVER NATS, MOVE CLOSER TO NL EAST CROWN
In a back-and-forth affair that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the Philadelphia Phillies emerged victorious over their National League East rivals, the Washington Nationals, by a final score of 7-5 on August 3, 2026, at Citizens Bank Park.
The Phillies, seeking to solidify their grip on the NL East division lead, came out swinging in the bottom of the first inning, plating two runs off Nationals’ starter, Eric Fedde. The visitors quickly responded in the top of the second, however, as a Juan Soto two-run homer tied the game at two apiece.
The tension continued to build throughout the evening, with both teams trading runs in a see-saw battle that saw the Phillies take a 5-4 lead into the top of the eighth. That’s when the Nationals’ bullpen imploded, surrendering two crucial runs on a pair of bases-loaded walks to Kyle Schwarber and Alec Bohm, respectively.
Phillies’ closer, Craig Kimbrel, closed out the game in the ninth, securing his 24th save of the season to give his team the hard-fought victory. The win improves the Phillies’ record to 77-38, good for a seven-game lead over the Atlanta Braves in the NL East.
“We just needed to stick to our game plan and play some solid baseball,” said Phillies’ manager, Rob Thomson, in a post-game interview. “The guys responded well under pressure, and that’s what we’re all about.”
The Phillies will look to continue their winning ways as they head to Miami to face the Marlins in a three-game series starting on August 5.
