3 options to replace Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts for Week 6 & beyond after suffering blood clot

Jalen Hurts is out for the Eagles’ Week 6 clash with the Carolina Panthers after a follow‑up ultrasound revealed movement in a superficial blood clot that first appeared in his left calf during Week 4. The quarterback, who had been cleared to play in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars, will remain sidelined until the clot is resolved, forcing Philadelphia to look for a short‑term replacement.
The most straightforward option is to keep the offense within the existing system by turning to backup Tanner McKee. Drafted in the sixth round in 2023, McKee has already appeared in six games for the Eagles, starting twice. He has spent the last two seasons learning the playbook behind Hurts, and his familiarity with the roster could help the team stay competitive while the starter recovers.
If the team anticipates a longer absence, veteran quarterback Andy Dalton could be a more experienced choice. Dalton was acquired from the Panthers in March for a seventh‑round pick and has a clear role in Philadelphia’s offense. Although he has only attempted one pass this season—an interception in a Week 3 loss to the Bears—his Pro Bowl pedigree and knowledge of the system could provide stability.
A more intriguing possibility is a reunion with former Eagles star Carson Wentz. Wentz, who led the team to a Super Bowl appearance in 2017, has spent the past few years with other franchises. Bringing him in would add starting experience and a proven track record, but would require negotiations with the Vikings and could be a longer‑term solution if Hurts’ recovery takes more time.
The Eagles will need to decide quickly which of these options best supports the team’s push to avoid a fourth straight loss as they head into Week 6.
