The Philadelphia Union extended their run of dominance with an eighth straight win, defeating Chicago Fire 3‑1 at Soldier Field on Wednesday night. The match, the Union’s eighth consecutive victory, saw the team rally from a halftime deficit to secure a club‑record 14‑match unbeaten streak (12‑0‑2).
Key to the turnaround was 17‑year‑old Cavan Sullivan, who supplied the second‑half assist that set up Bruno Damiani’s winner. The assist marked Sullivan’s 21st goal contribution of the season (7 goals and 14 assists), setting a new MLS record for a teenager in a single campaign. The milestone also tied him with Lionel Messi and others for 14 assists, one shy of league leader Son Heung‑Min.
Interim head coach Ryan Richter praised the youngster’s growing impact. “It seems like every week something else is popping up for him,” Richter said. “I’m so happy for him, and a big emphasis for him is to continue to be decisive in games.” Sullivan, however, remained humble, saying he felt he had more to learn. “I played sort of terrible tonight, so I’m not really focused on any records or stats like that, to be honest,” he remarked, adding that he would review film to improve.
The win over Chicago also proved significant because it was the first time this season that the Union beat a top‑four Eastern Conference team, adding credibility to their MLS Cup aspirations. Union defender Neil Pierre echoed Sullivan’s hunger, noting that the team’s “dirty work” and focus are key to their success. With upcoming fixtures against Charlotte, New England, and Nashville, the Union look set to keep their momentum heading into the playoffs.
