The Eagles have decided not to place quarterback Jalen Hurts on injured reserve after a superficial blood clot was found in his calf. The move keeps him on the active roster, allowing the possibility of a return before the team’s Week 10 bye. Sources told Reuters that the club believes the clot is treatable, and Hurts is still weighing the best treatment plan.
If Hurts had been placed on short‑term injured reserve, he would have been ineligible through Week 9, making his earliest possible return the November 22 game against the Steelers. By staying active, the Eagles preserve the chance that he could play in the October 26 home game versus the Cowboys or the November 1 trip to Washington.
The clot first appeared on an ultrasound in London before the Week 5 matchup with Jacksonville. Team doctors concluded that Hurts could safely play, and he completed 21 of 40 passes for 220 yards in the 19‑17 loss. A follow‑up ultrasound Wednesday night showed the clot had moved. While a player on blood‑thinners cannot play, the medical outlook remains uncertain. If the clot worsens, a three‑month course of blood‑thinners could be required. League doctors who have not examined Hurts believe the issue could cost him several weeks, while team insiders consider a week‑to‑week approach.
Head coach Nick Sirianni said, “Jalen’s health is of utmost importance to all of us in the building.” The decision leaves the door open for Hurts to return in the next few weeks, but the exact timeline remains unclear.
