Eagles Soar Past Patriots in Thrilling Preseason Opener
The Philadelphia Eagles kicked off their 2024 preseason campaign in electrifying fashion, downing the New England Patriots 27-20 at Lincoln Financial Field. In front of a raucous sellout crowd, the Birds showcased their impressive depth and resilience, ultimately outlasting a determined Patriots squad.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts led the charge, orchestrating a dynamic offense that produced 397 yards of total offense. Hurts connected with wide receiver DeVonta Smith on a 40-yard touchdown strike in the second quarter, giving the Eagles a 10-6 lead. He also added a crucial rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter, sealing the win for Philadelphia.
The Eagles’ high-powered offense was matched by a stifling defense, which held the Patriots to a season-low 20 points. Defensive end Brandon Graham tallied two sacks, while linebacker Nakobe Dean intercepted a Mac Jones pass in the third quarter, thwarting a potential Patriots scoring opportunity.
Philadelphia’s special teams unit also played a pivotal role in the victory, with kicker Jake Elliott connecting on three field goals, including a 52-yarder in the fourth quarter that stretched the Eagles’ lead to 10 points.
The Eagles’ preseason opener was marked by several notable performances, including a breakout game from rookie wide receiver John Metchie III, who hauled in four receptions for 62 yards. With their win, Philadelphia sets its sights on the regular season, which gets underway in just three weeks. The Eagles will host the Indianapolis Colts in their regular-season opener on September 10.
